Orthotic Therapy

Holistic approach

At Milton Chiropractic Clinic we take a holistic approach. We look at the body as being an interconnected system of specialized parts. The support structure which holds everything together is made up of bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Your feet are the foundation of your body, and if your feet are not properly supported, it can give you problems anywhere from your ankles up to your neck

The Feet; Engineering Masterpieces

We take our feet for granted but each foot is an engineering masterpiece. The foot is made up of 26 bones, 33 joints and more than 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments. Biomechanical problems affecting the feet can increase stresses within the foot structures and the surrounding soft tissues, creating localized pain in the foot, ankle and also problems in the lower limbs, knees, hips and back. Correction of poor foot biomechanics with Custom Made Orthotics can improve and prevent many types of symptoms such as:

  • Forefoot Pain
  • Plantar Fasciitis (pain at the sole of your feet)
  • Policeman’s Heel (Heel Spur)
  • Ankle Pain
  • Shin Pain
  • Knee Pain

The aim of a Custom Made Insole is to correct dysfunctional biomechanics and therefore:

  • Reduce pain
  • Provide support
  • Prevent or halt the development of foot deformity
  • Provide better positionin
  • Relieve pressure on a certain area of the foot
  • Improve the overall biomechanical function of the foot
  • Improve pelvic alignment
  • Reduce lower limb torsion and knee stress

Orthotic Footscan

During the ‘First visit’ we will check the posture of your feet, looking for problems like flat feet or a difference in leg length. People especially at risk are those who stand or walk on hard surfaces for more than 4 hours daily, wear their shoes unevenly, have knock knees or bow legs, or whose feet “toe out” when they are walking. If we think this attributes to your problem, we will recommend an orthotic scan. This scan doesn’t hurt and only requires you to walk across a pressure plate, which has thousands of tiny sensors embedded in it, capturing the distribution of pressure of your foot over time. From your step, the computer displays 2d and 3d visual representations of the pressure under your foot. You can see where you have too much or too little pressure. The information is then summarized in a report that can be printed for you to see. The information in the report will help determining if you need orthotic therapy. When it is determined that you will benefit from orthotic therapy, your information is sent to a laboratory. From there your custom made orthotics are manufactured specially for you and your feet.
